The HTC One M8 Android 5.0 Lollipop update is finally here and delivering tons of new features and changes to HTC’s flagship smartphone, but the Android 5.0 Lollipop update is also causing problems for many. The update initially started outside of the US for unlocked or developer devices, and then earlier this month the HTC One M8 in the US finally received Android 5.0 Lollipop for some.
HTC’s One M8 Android 5.0 Lollipop update first arrived for the Google Play Edition last year, and then rolled out to a few small select markets, as well as for unlocked international models and the developer HTC One M8 here in the US. However, while most are enjoying the update, there are a few problems that appear to be causing problems and frustrating some owners.

For starters, today we learned the Verizon HTC One M8 Android 5.0 update has been delayed into March, but for those who’ve already received it we’re hearing a few rather bad comments regarding the changes, performance, battery life and more. Read on for a few more details, and some potential fixes.
While the HTC One M8 Android 5.0 update is great and brings tons of new stuff packed inside of Android 5.0 Lollipop, it’s also causing a few owners some problems. Not listed in the long HTC One M8 update change logs are the numerous HTC One M8 Lollipop problems that are plaguing some owners of the device. Over the past few months, and now after the update’s arrival in the United States, we’ve seen numerous complaints about the HTC One M8 Android 5.0 update, and more are surfacing now that it’s rolling out to carriers stateside.

With Android 5.0 Lollipop on the HTC One M8 users will notice a few changes immediately. The lockscreen has been completely tweaked and redesigned, as have the notifications in the pulldown drawer. These are better than ever and expandable, but a few have commented on them constantly freezing, not unlocking correctly to each app, and more. This is minor, and possibly something that can be fixed with Android 5.0.2 or Android 5.1 Lollipop and Sense UI 7.0 which is coming first to the HTC One M9, then older devices.
HTC One M8 Android 5.0 Problems
We first started hearing complaints from users outside the US who were first to receive the update, as well as some users in Canada that got the update in late January and earlier this month. Numerous threads over at Reddit and other forums have mentioned problems, lack of features, and more after the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the One M8, and these problems are frustrating many owners.
Most owners are reporting positive changes and smooth performance, not to mention slightly better battery life. At the same time, users are claiming the keyboard has lag, apps have been crashing (a known Lollipop bug) as well as general stutters while using the device. Basically just general instability throughout the UI and with apps. Another change is Chrome web browser tabs are now individual “apps” in the recent apps menu, not one, which some don’t like. This can actually be changed in settings, but to each his own. In the recent apps menu hit the three dots for menu, and in settings change the recent apps or multi-tasking window back to the old mode.
Users can also disable the lockscreen notifications in settings if they’d like, by heading into settings and managing your security and what shows up on the lockscreen. With Android 5.0 Lollipop these new lockscreen notifications are extremely helpful, but some want them gone. It’s also worth noting you can keep them, while opting for it not to show the content until the device is actually unlocked, for privacy reasons.
Tips
First thing you’ll want to do after such a major software update is to turn off your smartphone. Not just a general reboot from the options when you hold down power, but actually power it off, then turn it back on. Android 5.0 will optimize all your apps, and start fresh, likely clearing any old files leftover from the update, and this should resolve most issues.
Another thing users can try before taking more extreme measures is to clean out any leftover remnants from the large Android 5.0 Lollipop update. Advanced users can head into recovery by turning the phone off and powering it back on while holding power and volume down, and clearing the cache. Don’t wipe data, as this will erase the entire smartphone and ALL files. Wiping the cache usually solves almost all problems, and is your next step. Those who aren’t as advanced or don’t want to mess with scary stuff like the recovery mode can simply download and run the Clean Master app. This removes old and unwanted files as well as leftovers from the update. It can improve battery life, return some storage space used from the update, and more.
Last but not least is the most extreme measure, which is doing a factory data reset. Personally I do this on all major software updates, to start with a clean slate. Make sure you backup all your files, photos, text messages and more, then head into settings and do a factory data reset. This erases everything and starts fresh, and Android 5.0 Lollipop even has a pretty good restore feature to put icons back where they were, and download all your old apps for you. So give this a try if you’re still experiencing problems. The link above is for the Tap N Go restore, but if you skip this you can select your old HTC One M8 from a list and restore everything you had before the reset.
It’s no secret that Android 5.0.1 Lollipop has a few problems that Google has been working hard to address. They recently released Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, and now even an Android 5.1 Lollipop update is coming in the near future. These could address some of the battery drain and app crashing problems, but for now users are stuck waiting for those to arrive. That or the HTC Sense UI 7.0 update could also fix problems and further refine the HTC Android 5.0 experience. I updated to Lollipop 5.0 on my HTC ONE M8 a few days ago. I had my screen lock set to lock with a pin code. Previously, I could change the pin code or disable it at any time by going to my security settings, choosing pin code lock, entering my current pin and then either change it or select “none.” Now, I can not do either! I enter my current pin and then all the options fade to grey!! I want to set my screen lock to “none!’ How do I get rid of it?? It locks every 30 seconds, even though I have it set to “never!” Can you help??

hi, have you still got the lock screen problem ? I had the same problem, go to settings/security/clear credentials,remove all credentials. this worked for me, I can now set lock screen to “no lock screen”

Hate this update my keyboard suddenly has a mind of its own sometimes it works normal others it cuts off my typing, wont type at all, or freezes mid text. Battery life has gone way down we need another update that corrects the issues

It takes forever to type a text message since I updated my HTC one today. The phone freezes, my letters aren’t showing up and it takes almost a minute for incoming texts to show on my screen after I hear the chime. Is there any way to fix the text message problem?

I am having the exact same problem on my M8 since the moment I updated the phone. I called Verizon and they said I should restart the phone (like I didn’t try that first) and clear out some memory (as if 6GB free isn’t enough). I explained that the problem started the MINUTE after I downloaded the update. They said that the problem could not be due to the update. It must be me. They recommended I take some classes on how to use my android at the local store. Not joking.

The other problem is the phone constantly changes my settings spontaneously. I hate predictive text. But my M8 apparently loves it, and spontaneously turns it on every couple days. I prefer to save things to my micro SD card. But my M8 spontaneously changes settings to “save to internal memory.” Then, 6 months ago, I woke up to the gift of my M8 spontaneously factory-resetting itself, deleting months worth of family pictures and important documents.
This phone doesn’t suck intrinsically. But it sucks by default. It’s virtually unusable because there are too many chefs stirring the pot (Verizon, HTC, Android, every different app).
I think we should give one of these phones to every member of ISIS. They’ll kill themselves out of frustration within weeks.

Updated to android lollipop 5.0 in India and it heats up way too much than it did previously. Battery life has suffered because of the heating issue. Need an update ASAP from htc to rectify this.

I’m also disappointed with this new update,5.0.1,Croatia TELE2 my phone is slower a little bit,and some applications act weird,suddenly they stoped by itself,error reports,this was not happening before,in generally phone has a strange behavior,this isn’t my old phone,I don’t like this…

For goodness sake, I can’t even receive my text messages properly!!! I keep getting part of the text and a box stating
“Message Format Not Supported!!” This is ridiculous!!! Beta test these updates before unloading them on HTC customers who paid through the nose for your phone, that now does not work!!! FIX THESE PROBLEMS AND RELEASE A MAINTENANCE/SERVICE PACK ASAP!!!

I’m fed up of this rubbish phone i wish I’d stuck with Samsung. Since the update my phone hasn’t worked right and the battery life is terrible before the update it would last all day now only lasts a couple of hours.

I’m also having issues with SMS text messaging where the keyboard has a mind of its own. I never asked for this, it’s becoming frustrating and intolerable. Hope the repair update is launched within this upcoming month.

This is incredibly frustrating! I won’t be able to receive some text messages, I’m not able to send some, and when I do, my friends are receiving duplicates. The battery life is terrible now. I used to be able to leave my phone unplugged all day, but now I have to keep it plugged in or the battery life is sucked away. I have to constantly leave it on Wi-Fi (instead of mobile data), but if I’m outside on mobile data, I basically have no way of receiving or sending messages, and the battery life drains instantly. I regret doing the upgrade, and I’m starting to regret switching from my Samsung Galaxy to HTC One.

If I only read this post before updating my HTC One M7. I don’t use too much apps I suppose, but those I use now regularly freeze. Especially Mail, Minimal Text, Business Calendar and Delayed Lock are driving me nuts.

The last update makes my Verizon HTC one m8 which was 4.4.4 then 5.0.1 then 5.0.2…It freezes, close apps, closes chrome app, phone has gone black once and had to restart to turn on again, takes me off line on eBay (says check my connection), text don’t come, texts sent are blank if too large, keyboard in texting doesn’t work sometimes and freezes and changes settings as many times as I change them back, system lags awful, I also don’t have guest view among other things I should have with lollipop…and there is probably more! Oh and did I mention it’s the second phone since Dec 2nd? I’m hating the phone I loved in Dec. Need a fix for this mess!

Let’s be clear, this is a very nice phone… When I bought it anyway. It had Android 4.4.4 Kitkat on it, worked as a charm. Battery life was plenty for two days normal usage. All apps worked fine, on WiFi and everything.
Then HTC released their Android 5, Lollipop. Let’s be clear about this as well, there’s nothing wrong with Android 5. I have a Nexus 7 that works perfectly with the new Android 5. HTC however somehow managed to really screw it up, or did too little to port it to this device. Not sure which.
Anyway, battery life now is hardly enough for 1 day. Worst is that half of my apps are not able to use the WiFi Internet connection properly anymore, which forces me to turn off WiFi all the time and rocket my mobile data usage. Let’s be clear again, this worked like a charm in the Android 4.4.4 version.
Ok, sure, I could wait for a next release, so I’ll just try to revert back to the factory setting. I’d expected that would be possible, but nooo, HTC was apparently very confident in their release that it has even overwritten the factory cache with the Android 5 build. HTC, you really messed up here…

Works great on Nexus 7 not on HTC One m8. locks up sometimes and i can’t even power it off, the power button won’t work I just have to let it set until it works again. apps don’t work right sometimes. How do I go back to previous OS for now until they get the bugs out? This wasn’t ready for prime time yet on this phone.

Since the upgrade the swipe down function on my notification bar ceased to work and now it’s gradually moving down the screen! About the top cm on screen doesn’t respond to touch. I can turn the phone to landscape and it works but have resorted to sending the phone back to HTC.

Do a factory data reset (which wipes all your info, so back it up) and see if it still does it. If so, get a replacement

Have the exact same problem. Top right corner of the screen has lost its touch function. Have to tilt it to landscape to use the touch. It’s ridiculous. I’ve also seen this on YouTube as well with the same demonstration. Did you get a replacement / new one assuming it’s still under warranty?

I cannot get my MS Exchange email to work after Lollipop update with Verizon. It won’t work in the stock email app, the official Microsoft app, the Nine email app, etc. Verizon’s response was maddening, “not our problem, wait for Google to fix it.” This update has left my phone useless. Any fixes????? Yeah, the notifications are better, but this update was 90% sabotage. Help!

So i used to love the fact that when listening to music i could change to the next song on the lock screen now thats not happening is there anyway this can be fixed to come back? While driving it was easy to just tap my phone and skip now i cant even skip music withought having to unlock and go to whatever music app im using that’s my only issue and i hope we can bring it back please!

Martha, I’m sotry to hear about the problem you are having with the music app. Are you using the stock one or Google music? I’ve always used the stocked one and I have never had any problems with changing tracks on the screen lock. I ‘ve been able to change or skip tracks once I wake up the phone. I can even change or skip any song on my DOT phone case cause BTW I don’t recommend that DOT phose case. It’s a hassle to use when you are not use to it. DO NOT BUY IT!!

I appreciate any help. I own a M8 and before the update I had notification icons on my notification bar on the lock screen. After the update, all of the icons are missing when the lock screen is on. This is driving me crazy. Thank you

I have 5.0.1 and the last few days some of my apps will not Load.I did a factory reset and the problem still persists.I took it too my local Verizon store and they told me to wait for 5.0.2,or 5.1.

After the update half of my apps work and the other half crash on loading and won’t let them load at all even tried a factory reset and reinstalled apps fresh and it work for 1 day and then went back to crashing

HTC One M8 post upgrade performance is now awful. Phone hangs, goes dark for several minutes and then reboots, some apps now just open and immediately close, uninstalled and reinstalled apps, updated all apps, phone has 32 gb capacity and 1.7.9 gb used. SD card almost clean. Have cleared cache and have done factory reset which have not helped at all but they have convinced me the HTC One M8 that I did like before the upgrade is now a useless piece of shit. My experience exactly. Additionally, the Lollipop update no longer recognizes the security certs of my Microsoft Exchange corporate email. It has made the phone totally useless. HTC basically said “yeah, that’s too bad, nothing we can do.” I’ll smash this phone first chance I get and never consider another HTC product. Phone was great before Lollipop “upgrade.” Ha. Customer service response took weeks, and was so pathetic it was insulting.

I will echo what everyone else is saying, the phone was great when I bought it…I LOVED IT, and convinced to other people to buy the phone as well. Now it’s a shell of its former self. The latest camera update was the final straw HTC! You literally ruined my phone thanks to horrible updates. I remember when I used to love the battery life on this phone, now I have to carry my charging cord everywhere I go. Why did you do this…alienating everyone who currently has the M8 doesn’t seem to make business sense. For anybody considering an HTC One flagship phone go read the HTC camera app reviews and see how they treat their customers. And the geniuses at HTC made it impossible for us to roll back the updates so we’re stuck with this substandard version of the phone as well as the memories of when it used to be awesome. I’m actually buying a new phone 11 months into a contract because I can’t stand it any more. Obviously not an HTC phone…never ever again. I hate to say it, but here I come Samsung.

My htc m8 was great for the first 3 months, then it got it first update, and its been down hill ever since getting worse with every update.its now a poor phone at best. I will never buy htc again! HTC LEARN FAST, IF IT AINT BROKE DONT TRY TO FIX IT!

I’ve read all the complaints on keyboards and i say you’re pretty lucky, mine doesn’t even show up anymore. This happens at least once a day and I have to restart it every time it happens :(

I am running with Android 5.02 and just installed the “new and improved” yahoo messenger app. I cannot get any alerts to work with this app… no sounds, no led no matter what I do. Anyone else with the same Problem?

Each and every HTC update I had done for my M8 screwed up the phone and user experience.. So I haven’t been updating any HTC related apps, software, firmware whatever the works… I’m trying to stop before more damage is done.. I prefer everyone not to buy a HTC phone ( I used to own HTC HD2, One, One M8 and was loyal.. ) They really really really are a very very very bad company..
